The Great Ace Attorney 2 Chapter 1:The Adventure of the Blossoming Attorney – Thoughts/Spoilers

In this blog post I would like to give my thoughts on the first episode of the long anticipated(for me) DGS2

Released 2 years after the first game, Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2 continues the story of Ryunosuke and friends in their adventures in theLondon, as well as presumably wrap up many of the unanswered questions from the first game.

The first case of the game takes place approximately 2 months after the 5th case of the first game, with Susato having returned to Japan after being summoned by her father for…reasons.

Susato adorns a lawyers badge and must defend her friend Haori, for the murder of the  exchange student Jezail Brett.

Thoughts

As far as first cases go, it was a fairly by the numbers experience. The case although simple, dives somewhat into the politics of international relations between a still very primitive Japan and the rest of the world. We are also given a glimpse into a patriarchal feudal Japan that forces Susato to use a disguise and go under the pseudonym  Ryutaro Naruhodo.

The case also brings back many of the characters from the first game. In fact, with the exception of 2 characters, all of the characters are from the first game. Which bring me to my complaint for this case; Essentially, this game is just more of the first game. A lot of the music is recycled from the first game, the cross examination music is the same, the objection music is the same, the court lobby music is the same. I can only think of one piece of music,  that was new which was assigned to 1 of the 2 new characters in this case Mamemo Heita. The sprites for Susato are almost all recycled from from Rynosuke’s sprites from the first game. You could argue that maybe she is essentially trying to imitate Rynosuke(She is pretending to be his cousin after all), or that she simply adopting what she learnt from her time with him. BUT, it would have been nice to see her blossom into her own fold.

As for the 2 new characters to this case, although brief, were a mixed bag.

Not much can be said for Haori, her character serves to reintroduce us to some of the events of the 1st case from the first game. She unfortunately doesnt leave much of an impression. Given that this is a court only case, she isn’t to blame.

Heita’s rabunctious character adds life to a somewhat gloomy first case. His motive for murder is also somewhat sympathetic, he cannot stand the injustice of Jezail getting away with murder and furthermore tease him about it. His motives weren’t self serving and somewhat justified, because FUCK Jezail Brett.

Far from answering any of the questions from the first game, the game only gives us more questions we’re left to wonder about. A few of these being

  • Why did Jezail murder Watson from the first game? It’s actually mentioned several times in this case that Jezail’s motve was unclear, meaning the writers are intentionally leaving it a mystery, perhaps it will be answered in a later case.
  • Why did Susato’s father pretend to be gravely ill and summon Susato back to Japan?
  • Before his arrest Heita, says that he has uncovered the truth about why Jezail would have never been found guilty even if extradited to Shanghai. He implies that a nefarious scheme is in place but is silenced before he can finish.
